Family Activity: Cup Racing

What You Will Need:

  • 1-2 Large Packs of Solo Cups

  • 1 Permanent Marker

How many cups you need will be determined by how many teams you have and how many cups you want in each stack. (For Example, We had 4 teams with 50 cups per stack, so we got around 200 Cups)

How To Play

Preparation:

  1. Divide into even teams (there must be a minimum of 2 teams and each team must have a minimum of one person)

  2. Divide the cups into even stacks; one stack per team.

  3. With your permanent marker, mark the lip of the top cup on each stack around the rim so that is distinct from the other cups on the stack, this will be the starting point, as well as the "finish line" for the race!

Gameplay:

  1. The first person from each team will grab their team's stack of cups. The other teammates (if applicable) can stand behind the first person, or for an added challenge, can stand across the room and run over to get the cups when it is their turn to "race".

  2. Someone will count down and say "Go" to start the race. At this point, each person with cups will take the cup on the top of their stack, remove it, and stack it on the bottom under the marked cup as fast as they can.

  3. Each person will repeat this process (removing cups and putting them on the bottom of the stack) until the marked cup is at the top of the stack. *If there is only one person on each team, this is the end of the race! Whoever finished their stack first, wins!

  4. As soon as you have finished your stack, pass it to the next teammate. They will repeat the process until each person on the team has had a turn.

  5. Whichever team finishes the fastest, wins!

Additional Tips:

  • We played with a few children who needed assistance stacking the cups, we divided the children evenly across the teams so that it was still a fair race for everyone since we are not a "just let the kids win" type of family(;

  • Another way to make this more challenging would be to have the person stacking the cups close their eyes when they stack and have their team let them know when they have reached the black-marked cup! This way there would be an added teamwork/collaboration aspect to the game!

I'm thinking that this "game" would be a great way to break up a Cub Scout meeting or at a college dorm where the teams would/could be floor against floor or quad against quad, even among sports teams. Solo cups are fairly indestructible and it could be really humorous if it was played as a drinking game. Thank you for another game/use for Solo cups. We used to stack the cups with the boys. You can figure out how you play that way, actually play it anyway you want. Trust me when I say, I have to wait for a new debit card and I'll be back to make an order. Love watching Pat and Keith in the morning…
